Venepuncture and Cannulation Course Sydney

ANATE’s venepuncture and cannulation course in Sydney covers both clinical skills in a single three-hour face-to-face session. Rather than attending two separate courses on different days, you build competency in both venepuncture and peripheral IV cannulation in one focused, practical training session at our Sydney training centre. It is one of the most efficient ways for working healthcare professionals to develop both skills without extended time away from the workplace..

What is a Venepuncture and Cannulation Course?

A venepuncture and cannulation course teaches healthcare professionals how to safely perform two core clinical procedures: blood collection via venepuncture, and peripheral IV access via cannulation.

Venepuncture involves inserting a needle into a peripheral vein to collect a blood sample for laboratory analysis. The needle is removed immediately after the sample is taken.

Cannulation involves inserting a plastic IV cannula into a vein and leaving it in place so that fluids, medications, or blood products can be delivered over time. It requires a higher level of skill and carries greater complication risk than venepuncture.

ANATE’s combined course covers both procedures in a single training day, delivered entirely face-to-face at our Sydney training centre. It is designed for nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, and other AHPRA-registered healthcare workers who need to develop or consolidate both skills.

What You Will Learn?

In Venepuncture:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the peripheral vascular system
  • Vein assessment and selection of appropriate blood collection sites
  • Equipment preparation — vacutainer, butterfly needle, and needle and syringe methods
  • Correct order of draw and collection tube identification
  • Infection prevention and aseptic technique throughout blood collection
  • Specimen labelling, handling, and transport requirements
  • Recognising and managing venepuncture complications

In Cannulation:

  • Peripheral vein assessment and cannulation site selection
  • IV cannula selection, insertion, and securement technique
  • Applying aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT) throughout the procedure
  • Post-insertion care, monitoring, and cannula removal
  • Recognising and managing cannulation complications including infiltration and phlebitis
  • Patient consent, communication, and documentation for both procedures
  • Scope of practice and legislative considerations for NSW healthcare professionals

Who Should Enrol?

This combined venepuncture and cannulation course in Sydney is designed for AHPRA-registered healthcare professionals who need both skills as part of their clinical role. It is suitable for:
  • Registered Nurses (RNs) and Enrolled Nurses (ENs)
  • Midwives
  • Paramedics and emergency care personnel
  • General practice nurses and clinic staff
  • Allied health professionals including radiographers
  • Overseas-trained nurses and healthcare professionals working in Australia
  • Healthcare workers returning to practice after a period away
Participants must be working in, or preparing to work in, a clinical environment where both venepuncture and cannulation are performed within their scope of practice.

Why Train in Both Skills Together?

Venepuncture and cannulation share overlapping foundations, vein anatomy, infection control, patient communication, and equipment handling which makes training in both on the same day highly efficient. You build on the venepuncture foundation directly into cannulation technique, reinforcing the shared skills while learning what makes each procedure distinct. For healthcare professionals who need both skills in their clinical role, completing them together also reduces time away from work compared to attending two separate courses on different days. If you only need one of these skills, ANATE offers each as a standalone course.

ANATE's combined course covers both venepuncture (blood collection) and peripheral IV cannulation in a single face-to-face training day. Topics include vein assessment, equipment use, aseptic technique, order of draw, cannula insertion and securement, complication management, and clinical documentation for both procedures.

ANATE's combined venepuncture and cannulation course is delivered as a full day of face-to-face training at our Revesby training centre.

The course is open to AHPRA-registered healthcare professionals including Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Midwives, Paramedics, Allied Health Professionals, and Doctors for whom both procedures fall within their scope of practice. Overseas-trained nurses and healthcare professionals working in Australia are also welcome.

Yes. ANATE's venepuncture and cannulation course is designed for registered healthcare professionals. You must hold current AHPRA registration and both procedures must be within your scope of practice in your clinical role.

Yes. The course is entirely face-to-face and includes supervised hands-on practice using simulation equipment for both venepuncture and cannulation. You will practise blood collection techniques and IV cannula insertion throughout the session.

On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment covering both venepuncture and peripheral IV cannulation. Your employer may require additional supervised workplace practice and authorisation before independent performance of either procedure is approved.

Enrolled Nurses can perform venepuncture and cannulation in NSW provided both procedures fall within their individual scope of practice and they have demonstrated competency to their employer. Completing this course is an important step toward meeting that competency requirement. Always refer to AHPRA's scope of practice guidelines and confirm with your employer before performing either procedure independently.

Yes. Overseas-trained nurses and healthcare professionals working in Australia are welcome to enrol, provided they hold current AHPRA registration and both venepuncture and cannulation fall within their scope of practice.

Both skills require practice and confidence, but most healthcare professionals find them manageable with proper training. ANATE's course is structured to build both skills progressively throughout the day, with hands-on simulation time built in for each procedure so participants leave feeling genuinely prepared.

Yes. Venepuncture and cannulation skills are applicable across a wide range of healthcare settings including hospitals, general practice clinics, day surgery units, aged care facilities, community health services, and specialist clinics. Whether these procedures can be performed independently will depend on your employer's competency and authorisation requirements.

There is no legislated expiry for venepuncture or cannulation competency in Australia. Most employers recommend skills maintenance every one to two years, or as specified in their clinical policy. Regular practice in a clinical setting also supports skill retention between formal training sessions.

Yes. The course is delivered by ANATE in partnership with ETEA (RTO No. 5089) and the Statement of Attainment is recognised by healthcare employers across NSW and Australia as evidence of formal training in both venepuncture and peripheral IV cannulation.
