What is a Venepuncture Course?
A venepuncture course teaches healthcare professionals how to safely collect blood samples from patients using a needle inserted into a peripheral vein. The training covers patient identification, vein assessment, equipment selection, infection control, correct order of draw, specimen handling, and complication management, all in line with Australian clinical standards.
ANATE’s venepuncture course in Sydney is designed for nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, and other registered healthcare workers who need to develop or consolidate their blood collection skills. It is delivered entirely face-to-face, with hands-on simulation practice on a training arm throughout the session.

Venepuncture is the process of puncturing a vein with a needle to collect a blood sample for laboratory analysis. The needle is removed immediately after the sample is taken. It is a one-time, in-and-out procedure used purely for diagnostic purposes.
Cannulation involves inserting a plastic cannula into a vein and leaving it in place so that fluids, medications, or blood products can be administered over a period of time. It is a more complex skill with greater complication risk and stricter aseptic requirements.

Yes. The course is entirely face-to-face and includes supervised hands-on practice using a simulation training arm. You will practise vacutainer, butterfly needle, and needle and syringe venepuncture techniques during the session.
On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for venepuncture and routine blood collection. Your employer may require additional workplace competency sign-off before independent practice is approved.
Completing the course gives you the training and Statement of Attainment needed to demonstrate competency. Most healthcare employers require additional supervised practice and workplace authorisation before independent blood collection is approved. Yes. Overseas-trained nurses and healthcare professionals working in Australia are welcome to enrol, provided venepuncture is within their scope of practice in their current clinical role.
Venepuncture is not mandatory for every nursing role. However, many hospitals, medical centres, general practices, and aged care facilities require staff performing blood collection to hold a current competency. Requirements vary by employer and clinical setting.
There is no legislated expiry for venepuncture competency in Australia. However, most employers recommend skills maintenance every one to two years, or as specified in your employer's clinical policy. Regular practice in a clinical setting also supports skill retention between formal training sessions.

The correct order of draw is a standardised sequence for filling blood collection tubes to prevent cross-contamination between additives. The standard order in Australia follows the CLSI guideline: blood cultures first, followed by coagulation tubes (light blue), serum tubes (red or gold), heparin tubes (green), EDTA tubes (purple or pink), and then other additive tubes.
