Cannulation Course Sydney (Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation)

Peripheral IV cannulation is one of the most common clinical procedures performed in healthcare settings across Australia, and doing it well takes proper training. ANATE’s cannulation course in Sydney delivers the hands-on, practical skills nurses and healthcare professionals need to perform IV cannulation safely, confidently, and in line with Australian clinical standards. Delivered entirely face-to-face at our Sydney training centre, this course covers everything from vein assessment and aseptic technique to complication management and documentation, all in a single half-day session.

What is a Cannulation Course?

A cannulation course teaches healthcare professionals how to safely insert a peripheral intravenous (IV) cannula into a patient’s vein. The training covers vein anatomy, site selection, equipment use, aseptic technique, complication recognition, and documentation, all in line with Australian clinical guidelines.

ANATE’s cannulation course is built around Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation, the nationally recognised unit of competency for this skill. It is designed for nurses, midwives, paramedics, and other AHPRA-registered healthcare professionals who need to develop or consolidate their cannulation skills within their scope of practice.

What You Will Learn?

  • Anatomy and physiology of the peripheral vascular system
    • Vein assessment and selection of appropriate cannulation sites
    • Equipment selection, preparation, and handling
    • Applying aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT) throughout the procedure
    • IV cannula insertion, securement, and post-insertion care
    • Recognising and managing complications including infiltration, phlebitis, and infection
    • Patient consent, communication, and distraction techniques
    • Accurate documentation and handover communication
    • Removal of peripheral IV cannulas
    • Legislative and scope of practice considerations for IV cannulation in NSW

What is the Difference Between Venepuncture and Cannulation?

This is one of the most common questions healthcare professionals ask when considering clinical skills training.

Venepuncture involves inserting a needle into a vein to collect a blood sample. The needle is removed immediately after collection. It is a one-time procedure used for diagnostic purposes.

Cannulation involves inserting a small plastic tube (cannula) into a vein and leaving it in place so that fluids, medications, or blood products can be delivered over time. It requires more skill, carries a higher complication risk, and must be performed under strict aseptic conditions.

Both skills are taught separately at ANATE. If you are looking to train in both, our August bundle offer lets you complete both courses for $450 each.

Who Should Enrol?

This cannulation course in Sydney is designed for AHPRA-registered healthcare professionals for whom IV cannulation is part of their clinical role. It is suitable for:
  • Registered Nurses (RNs) and Enrolled Nurses (ENs)
  • Midwives
  • Paramedics and emergency care personnel
  • Doctors and General Practitioners
  • Overseas-trained nurses and healthcare professionals working in Australia
  • Healthcare professionals returning to cannulation practice after a period away

  • Participants must be working in, or preparing to work in, a clinical environment where peripheral IV cannulation is performed within their scope of practice.

How to Become a Cannulation Nurse in Australia?

To perform IV cannulation as a nurse in Australia, you generally need to:

    1. Hold current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse
    2. Complete an accredited cannulation training course
    3. Demonstrate clinical competency under supervision in your workplace
    4. Obtain employer authorisation to perform cannulation within your scope of practice

Some healthcare settings may also require a minimum number of supervised cannulations before independent practice is approved. ANATE’s course covers the training component, giving you the skills and Statement of Attainment needed to progress through your employer’s competency pathway.

ANATE's cannulation course is open to AHPRA-registered healthcare professionals including Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Midwives, Paramedics, and Doctors for whom peripheral IV cannulation is within their scope of practice. Overseas-trained nurses and healthcare professionals working in Australia are also welcome to enrol.

ANATE's cannulation course runs for 3 hours and is delivered face-to-face in a single session at our Revesby training centre.

Yes. The course is entirely face-to-face and includes hands-on simulation practice covering IV cannula insertion, vein assessment, equipment handling, aseptic technique, and complication management.

On successful completion of ANATE's cannulation course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for HLTHPS009 Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation. Your employer may require additional workplace competency sign-off before independent practice is approved.

Completing the course gives you the training and Statement of Attainment needed to demonstrate competency. Most healthcare employers require additional supervised practice and workplace authorisation before a nurse or healthcare professional can perform cannulation independently. Check your employer's specific competency requirements before your course date.

Yes. Overseas-trained nurses and healthcare professionals working in Australia are welcome to enrol, provided they hold current AHPRA registration and cannulation is within their scope of practice in their clinical role.

IV cannulation is not mandatory for every nursing role. However, many hospitals and healthcare employers require staff performing IV therapy to hold a current competency in cannulation. Requirements vary by employer, state, and clinical setting.

There is no legislated expiry for cannulation competency in Australia. However, the industry standard is skills maintenance every two years, or as required by your employer's policy. Regular practice in a clinical setting also supports skill retention between formal training sessions.

Cannulation requires practice and confidence, but most healthcare professionals find it manageable with proper training and supervision. ANATE's course is structured to build both skill and confidence through hands-on simulation, so participants leave the session feeling genuinely prepared rather than just having attended a lecture.

ANATE offers a nationally recognised cannulation course at our Revesby training centre in Sydney. The course covers HLTHPS009 Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation and is delivered entirely face-to-face, with online registration available.

In clinical practice, the three main types of vascular access are peripheral IV cannulation (short-term access through a peripheral vein), central venous cannulation (access through a central vein such as the subclavian or jugular), and intraosseous cannulation (access through bone marrow in emergency situations). ANATE's course focuses on peripheral IV cannulation, which is the most commonly performed type in general healthcare settings.
