Education and Care
HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is the unit that early childhood services are required to hold, and it is the only one of the three that satisfies the regulation. ANATE delivers it as a blended course, an online component beforehand and a face to face session of five to seven hours at our Revesby training centre, issued as a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment through our partner RTO, ETEA (RTO 5089).
What is HLTAID012 Childcare First Aid?
HLTAID012 is a unit of competency written specifically for people working with children. It covers everything in general first aid, and then adds the content an education and care setting needs: managing asthma and anaphylaxis in children, infant and child resuscitation, and the documentation and reporting expectations that apply in a regulated service.
It contains three units in one. HLTAID009 Provide CPR, HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid all sit inside it, so completing HLTAID012 means you hold general first aid as well.

Why a general first aid certificate is not enough for childcare
This is the single most common and most expensive mistake people make when booking.
Education and care services in Australia operate under the Education and Care Services National Law and National Regulations, with quality standards administered through ACECQA. Those regulations require educators to hold approved first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma management qualifications. HLTAID012 is the unit that covers all three in one.
A general HLTAID011 first aid certificate does not meet that requirement on its own. Someone who books it for a childcare role will usually be told by their employer or at their next assessment that it does not qualify, and will have to pay for the correct course anyway. The gap is $20 and a couple of hours, and getting it wrong costs the full price of a second course.

Resuscitation for children and infants
- DRSABCD applied to infants, toddlers and older children
- Compression depth, hand position and ratios that change with the size of the child
- Defibrillator use on children, including paediatric pads
- Choking in infants and children, which presents and is managed differently to adults
Asthma and anaphylaxis in an education setting
- Recognising an asthma attack in a child who may not be able to describe it
- Reliever medication, spacers and the asthma first aid steps
- Recognising anaphylaxis and distinguishing it from a milder allergic reaction
- Adrenaline autoinjector administration and the response afterwards
- Working with individual risk minimisation and medical management plans
Childhood illness and injury
- Febrile convulsions and seizures
- Head injuries, fractures and falls
- Bleeding, burns, bites and stings
- Poisoning and ingestion of foreign objects
- Diabetic emergencies and other medical conditions in children
Working within a regulated service
- Duty of care towards children and the expectations on educators
- Incident, injury, trauma and illness record keeping
- Communicating with families after an incident
- Where first aid responsibilities sit within the service’s policies

Students enrolled in early childhood education and care qualifications, where it is commonly a placement prerequisite
Parents and grandparents are also welcome. The content is the same whether you work in a service or care for children at home.
Enrolment requirements
Because this is nationally accredited training, a few things are required by the training package rather than by ANATE, and they cannot be waived.
A Unique Student Identifier.
Every student in nationally recognised training in Australia needs a USI. It is free and takes a few minutes to create online. Without one, a Statement of Attainment cannot be issued

Brought on the day, to confirm the certificate is issued to the right person
The online pre-course component.
Completed before you attend. Participants who arrive without it cannot be assessed on the day
Physical participation.
Compressions are performed on a manikin at floor level, which means kneeling and sustained effort. Tell us beforehand if that is difficult and we will discuss options
Language, literacy and numeracy.
Enough English to follow instructions, complete the written assessment and work in a scenario. Support is available if you ask in advance

How you are assessed
Assessment is formal and is required by the unit, not optional. It has three parts.

A practical assessment, including uninterrupted compressions on a manikin placed on the floor
Certificates are not issued on the day. They are processed after the session and sent once assessment results are finalised, which is how accredited training works across the board.

Sessions run Monday to Saturday. The centre is closed on Sundays.
Yes. Group bookings are available for childcare centres, preschools, schools and OOSH services, and run at ANATE's Revesby training centre. Delivery at your own site can be arranged by special request.
Cancellations made at least 14 days before the session are refunded. Inside 14 days no refund is available, because seats are limited and holding one keeps another person out. Payment confirms and guarantees your place.
