HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the standard first aid qualification used by Australian workplaces, and it is the one named in most job advertisements that ask for first aid. ANATE delivers it as a blended course: an online component completed beforehand, then a face to face session of five to six hours at our Revesby training centre. It is issued as a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment through our partner RTO, ETEA (RTO 5089).
What is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid?
HLTAID011 is a unit of competency from the national health training package. It covers recognising and responding to an emergency, providing first aid for a wide range of conditions until professional help arrives, and the CPR unit HLTAID009 sits inside it.
That last point is the one most people do not realise. Completing HLTAID011 gives you CPR as part of it. You do not need to book a separate CPR course alongside it.

They nest rather than sit side by side. CPR is inside first aid, and first aid is inside the childcare qualification. Booking a higher one does not mean you need the lower ones as well.
Three quick rules. If your job ad names a unit code, book that code. If it says “current first aid” with no code, HLTAID011 is what is meant. If you work with children in an education and care service, you need HLTAID012 and nothing lower will satisfy the regulation.

Who needs a first aid certificate
Safe Work Australia expects workplaces to provide first aid, and in practice that means at least one trained first aider on site. HLTAID011 is the qualification that satisfies it in almost every industry.
- Construction, trades and manufacturing, where it is often a site entry requirement
- Hospitality, retail and events
- Schools, universities and sporting clubs
- Aged care, disability and community services
- Office based workplaces appointing designated first aiders
- Anyone studying towards a health, education or community services qualification, where it is frequently a prerequisite
Enrolment requirements
Because this is nationally accredited training, a few things are required by the training package rather than by ANATE, and they cannot be waived.
- A Unique Student Identifier. Every student in nationally recognised training in Australia needs a USI. It is free and takes a few minutes to create online. Without one, a Statement of Attainment cannot be issued
- 100 points of identification. Brought on the day, to confirm the certificate is issued to the right person
- The online pre-course component. Completed before you attend. Participants who arrive without it cannot be assessed on the day
- Physical participation. Compressions are performed on a manikin at floor level, which means kneeling and sustained effort. Tell us beforehand if that is difficult and we will discuss options
- Language, literacy and numeracy. Enough English to follow instructions, complete the written assessment and work in a scenario. Support is available if you ask in advance
How you are assessed
Assessment is formal and is required by the unit, not optional. It has three parts.
- An online theory component completed before the session
- A written assessment on the day
- A practical assessment, including uninterrupted compressions on a manikin placed on the floor
How long a first aid certificate lasts
A Statement of Attainment does not technically expire, but industry practice does set a renewal cycle, and employers go by that rather than by the certificate itself.
- First aid: every three years. The full HLTAID011 unit is repeated
- CPR: every twelve months. Compression technique deteriorates quickly, so the CPR component is refreshed annually in between

No. Certificates are processed after the session and issued once assessment results are finalised. This applies to all nationally accredited training, not just ANATE.

You can, but it may not be enough. Education and care services require HLTAID012 Childcare First Aid, which includes asthma and anaphylaxis management for children.
Sessions run Monday to Saturday. The centre is closed on Sundays.
Yes. Group bookings are available for workplaces, schools, clinics and community organisations, and run at ANATE's Revesby training centre. Delivery at your own site can be arranged by special request.
Cancellations made at least 14 days before the session are refunded. Inside 14 days no refund is available, because seats are limited and holding one keeps another person out. Payment confirms and guarantees your place.
