HLTHPS006 is listed on the Australian Government’s national training register as part of the HLT Health Training Package. The training is relevant to workers in health and community services who have responsibility and appropriate authority to assist clients with medication as part of their role. It is not a nursing qualification and it does not authorise a worker to prescribe or dispense medication.

How Does the Medication Course Work?

ANATE’s medication course uses a blended learning model.

The online component is completed before the training day, allowing you to complete the theory before attending the face-to-face session. This means the classroom time is used for application rather than covering theory from the beginning.

The face-to-face session runs from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM at our Revesby training centre, a short walk from Revesby Station on the T8 line. Participants work through medication scenarios and documentation activities with the trainer, and can raise the situations they encounter in their own workplace.

Sessions are held in Sydney only. Group sessions for aged care, disability and community services providers can be arranged separately.

HLTHPS006 Course Requirements and Assessment

HLTHPS006 includes both practical and knowledge requirements.

The practical component is completed during the face-to-face session at our Sydney training centre. Participants work through medication assistance across five different medication types in a simulation lab, and are assessed on these skills during the session. There is no separate work placement to arrange and no workplace logbook to complete afterwards.

The knowledge component is a written questionnaire completed online before the training session. Most participants take three to four hours to finish it.

Entry requirements

All applicants complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment before enrolment, regardless of residency status.

Identification requirements are:

  • Australian citizens and permanent residents: passport and Medicare card
  • Non-residents: passport, a current copy of your visa, and health insurance

Applicants must be currently working in the industry, as the unit relates to medication assistance carried out within a work role.

What Happens After Completing HLTHPS006?

After successfully completing HLTHPS006, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the unit. The training provides the knowledge and practical skills required to assist clients with medication within the responsibilities and requirements of their role.

The skills covered in the course can be applied in health and community services settings where workers are responsible for assisting clients with medication. Participants should continue to follow their workplace procedures, client care requirements and any applicable authorisation or competency requirements when applying these skills in their role.

Completing HLTHPS006 does not make a worker responsible for prescribing or dispensing medication. The responsibilities of the worker remain dependent on their job role, workplace procedures and applicable requirements.

For workers who need to maintain or develop medication assistance skills as part of their current role, completing the unit provides recognised training relevant to those workplace responsibilities.

HLTHPS006 is for workers currently employed in the industry whose role involves assisting clients with medication. This includes workers in aged care, disability support, community services and home care. All applicants complete an LLN assessment before enrolment.
