About this course

The Youth Mental Health First Aid is a comprehensive 2-day course designed for individuals interested in learning how to provide initial support to adolescents aged 12-18 who are experiencing mental health challenges or crises, until professional help is available or the crisis resolves.

Participants of the course will explore the various signs and symptoms associated with typical mental health issues in young persons. They will learn how to identify and act upon emerging or intensifying mental health problems and understand the range of treatments and supports that can be offered.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of mental health issues in young individuals.
  • Implement an evidence-based action plan to initiate conversations about mental health first aid.
  • Evaluate and address various crisis situations to offer immediate support.
  • Understand the broader implications of mental illnesses, including their prevalence, risk factors, and available treatments.
  • Differentiate between normal developmental changes during adolescence and signs of potential mental health conditions.
  • Comprehend the responsibilities and limitations of a Mental Health First Aider, as well as the legal rights of minors in medical contexts.
  • Practice self-care techniques applicable to the role of a Mental Health First Aider.
