Nursing short courses are the practical way to add a skill without committing to a postgraduate program. ANATE runs face to face workshops in Sydney for Registered and Enrolled Nurses, most of them three hours in a single session, covering the procedures that turn up on a shift rather than the theory that turns up in an exam.

The short courses nurses book most

These three are the ones Registered and Enrolled Nurses ask for most often, whether it is for CPD hours or to widen the shifts they can take.

Venepuncture

Taking blood, from vein selection through to a clean draw.

Looking for a nationally accredited course instead?

The workshops above build a skill but don’t carry a nationally recognised qualification. If it’s a Statement of Attainment you need, ANATE delivers these through our partner RTO, ETEA (RTO 5089):

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

The standard first aid qualification most workplaces require, renewed every three years.

HLTAID009 Provide CPR

CPR certification on its own, renewed annually, for roles that don’t need the full first aid unit.

HLTAID012 Childcare First Aid

First aid for infants and children, required for anyone working in childcare or early education settings.

HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medication

The unit required to legally assist clients with medication in aged care and disability support.

Short courses and CPD: what actually counts

Nurses and midwives registered in Australia must complete a minimum number of continuing professional development hours each year to renew registration. The requirement is set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, and it is the area where nurses most often waste money.

CPD does not have to be nationally accredited to count. What it has to be is relevant to your context of practice, and documented. A three hour clinical workshop is three hours of CPD, and the certificate you leave with is the evidence you need if you are audited. Paying more for an accredited course purely to satisfy CPD is unnecessary unless the qualification itself is what you are after.

The distinction worth keeping in mind is between a course that gives you a qualification and a course that gives you a skill. Both are legitimate. They are just not interchangeable, and they are not priced the same.

Which short course should you do?

If you are chasing CPD hours before renewal

Any of the three hour workshops gives you three hours. Choose on relevance to your own practice rather than on price, since relevance is the part that has to hold up if your CPD is ever reviewed.

If you want to widen the shifts you can take

Venepuncture and cannulation are the two skills agency and casual nurses are asked for most, and the combined session covers both at a lower cost than booking them separately.

If you are moving into aged care, disability or community nursing

Bowel and stoma care and pain management cover the daily work of those settings, including assessment for clients who cannot self report.

If you are moving towards acute or cardiac care

ECG interpretation is the skill most commonly expected without ever having been formally taught.

If you trained overseas

Start with the workshops that expose you to Australian equipment, documentation and assessment tools, since those differ more than the clinical procedures themselves.

Why nurses choose a face to face short course

Online modules are cheaper and more convenient, and for background knowledge they do the job. What they cannot do is watch you perform a procedure and correct the part you are getting wrong, which is the entire point of a practical skill.

ANATE keeps group sizes small enough that every participant handles the equipment and gets individual correction. Sessions run for three hours rather than a full day, which means a course fits into a single morning rather than costing you a shift.

The workshops are professional development and are not units of competency. ANATE's first aid, CPR, childcare first aid and medication courses are nationally accredited and lead to a Statement of Attainment.
